Backpacking is a wonderfully enjoyable activity; involving hikes on any terrain, picnics, companionship, and amazing scenery. Not to mention the health benefits provided by the exercise! There are many things to consider when backpacking outdoors. Here are some tips to get those more out of your outdoor backpack experience.
Outdoor Backpacking Tips
- Travel light. Whether you are going on a long or short walk, attempt to travel as lightly as possible. Choose a light weight backpack, and only fill it with the essentials. Also wear light, comfortable, and breathable clothing. Traveling lightly when backpacking outdoors is the best way to ensure a comfortable hike, and allows you to conserve your energy.
- Distribute weight. Along with traveling lightly, be sure to distribute what weight you do have to carry. Seperating your backpack contents across multiple pockets allows for better balance and less strain. Using an external frame backpack, which is built specifically to distribute weight, is a great option – especially for those longer trips where more storage space (and more weight) are required. If you are traveling with someone else, consider sharing the load with them.
- Pack accordingly. When planning an outdoor backpack trip, it is important to consider the weather and the location. If it is rainy, be sure to wear a raincoat and pack extra socks. Also be sure to pack extra sunscreen on sunny days. Bringing and wearing comfortable and properly-fitted hiking boots is a must for any true backpacker.
- When packing, also consider the length of the trip. Be sure to pack enough food and snacks, as well as plenty of water. Keep in mind hiking will make you thirsty! If you’re going on an over-night backpack trip outdoors, be sure to pack sleeping gear. Extra socks, sweaters, gloves, and a warm sleeping bag are recommended for those over-night trips.
